Kamal Hasan was
born on November 7, 1954 in Paramakudi.
He is an actor, director, screenplay writer, producer, singer, lyricist
and what not…. He is well known for his sensational acting. He is the face of Tamil
Movies. He has won a
lot of awards for his performance.
Kamal as child artist:
He started his
career as a child artist. Kamal faced the camera by the age of six in the movie
“Kalathur Kannama” which earned him a good name. The film was
released on 12 August 1960. The film starred veteran actor Gemini Ganesan and
won the President’s Gold Medal. He also
acted with Sivaji Ganesan and M.G.Ramachandran during his childhood. Kamal
Haasan's family was very supportive of his interest in the performing arts.
His
career:
After seven years he came back to the industry. He
did supporting characters initially. As an adult, his first film role was in
the 1970 film “Maanavan”, in which he appeared in a dance sequence. He also did
a supporting role in the film “Annai Velankani” in which he was the assistant
director. His role in K.Balachander's 1973 film “Arangetram” was the beginning
of many noteworthy performances.
In 1974, the entered the Malayalam industry in the
film named “Kanyakumari”. His first break as a lead actor in Tamil films came
with “Apoorva Raagangal”, directed by K.Balachander, for which he also won his
first Filmfare award in Tamil. The plot of the film revolved around a young man
in love with an older woman and won the National Film Award for Best Feature
Film in Tamil Movie News.
Kamal Haasan learned to play the mridangam for this role. In 1976, Balachander
cast him as a womaniser trying to woo many women in ”Manmadha Leelai” which was
followed by “Oru oodhappu kan simittugiradhu”, which won him his second
consecutive Regional Filmfare (Tamil) Best Actor Award. Then “MoondruMudichu”,
“Avargal” also turned to be a big hit and got him a good name.
He debuted in the Telugu film industry as a lead
actor with the cross-cultural romantic film, “Maro Charitha” directed by
K.Balachander. It was also a major hit in Kamal’s career.
Few of the other famous films in this period were the Telugu film
“Sommokadidhi Sokkadidhi”, where he played dual roles, the musical entertainer
“Ninaithale Inikkum”, the snake horror film “Neeya” and “Kalyanaraman”.His movie “Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu” with actress Sridevi was released in 1980. This movie showed Kamal Hasan in a different venture. He won his first National award for the movie “Moondram Pirai” starring with Sridevi. No one can forget the climax scenes in that movie. The movies like “Punnagai Mannan”, “Vettrivizha”, “Nayagan”, “Apoorva Sagothargal”, “Unnal mudiyum thambi” all were blockbuster movies in his acting career.
The movies like “Guna”, “Devarmagan” explored the acting talent in Kamal Hasan. He also proved him in the genre of comedy. He has done many movies which proved him as a comedian. From “Hey ram” till “Vishwaroopam” kamal has been trying to do something different and to make his audience fully satisfied by seeing his Tamil Movies.
Kamal’s humanity:
Kamal is the first actor who converted his fan club to welfare trust. His fan clubs are involved in organising blood and eye donation drives and donating education materials to school students. He received the first Abraham Kovoor National Award for his Humanist Activities and Secular Life in 2004. He has turned his fan associations into social service organisations. In September 2010, Kamal Haasan launched a children’s cancer relief fund and presented roses to children with cancer at Sri Ramachandra University in Porur in the suburbs of Chennai.
